Who we are

Sahajiya is a non-governmental organization driven by a deep commitment to support individuals who lack access to the basic necessities required for a dignified life. Founded by Kaberi Chatterjee, the respected headmistress of Behala Girls' High School, the organization was born out of compassion and a strong desire to create meaningful change in society.

Its journey gained momentum during one of the most challenging times in Bengal’s history—the combined impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and Cyclone Amphan. During this period, Sahajiya stepped forward as a source of hope, providing essential aid such as medicines, hygiene products, masks, clothing, food, educational materials, and livelihood support to those in distress.

The organization began its relief work in Sandeshkhali, delivering food and clothing to cyclone victims. It later extended its efforts to Hingalgunge, where along with food distribution, it introduced sustainable livelihood initiatives such as vermicompost, fish feed, and saplings. Sahajiya has also stood beside acid attack survivors, supported orphans, assisted street beggars in Kolkata, and conducted relief work in areas like Surjyopur and Kashinagar. Looking ahead, the organization is planning to establish a homeopathic hospital in Surjyopur to further strengthen its impact.

Sahajiya has its roots in the initiative “Kichhu Kori Cholo” (Let’s Do Something), and since its inception, its community of members has been steadily growing. The vision of Sahajiya is to stand beside the neglected, uplift the marginalized, and restore dignity to those affected by social injustice. Whether it is providing healthcare, economic support, or social recognition, the organization strives to nurture and empower individuals—especially women—who continue to fight for their rightful place in society.

With an expanding network and an unwavering mission, Sahajiya invites more people to join hands and contribute to this journey. Every helping hand brings them closer to reaching even the most remote corners of Bengal, where even a small act of kindness can make a profound difference.
